Boardman students earned top honors in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Annual Blackout Poetry Contest, competing against more than 450 submissions from schools across Mahoning County.
Blackout poetry is a creative writing style in which students use an existing page of text and selectively “black out” words, leaving behind a new poem created from the remaining visible words and phrases. Many entries also include artistic designs and illustrations.
Rachel Dunlany earned First Place Overall, while Morgan Zola received Second Place Overall. Both students were presented with certificates and Barnes & Noble gift cards in recognition of their achievement.
Boardman students also had two top-place winners in the Arts Connect With Poetry category. Kendra Vogelberger and Dominic Dubos received special laser-edged and engraved replica trophies based on the designs from their poetry pieces.
Librarian Amy Burkard presented the awards during the recognition ceremony. English teachers Jen Basista and Kaitlin Steeb attended the presentation alongside their students.
Congratulations to all of our talented Spartan writers and artists for their outstanding accomplishments!
